SRE Add #2 Examples/GM Reference

Action Check = d6 + Stat + Skill/Flaw + Situational Modifiers

If you beat the required difficulty you succeed!

Opposed Checks, the higher one wins, but sometimes must beat a minimum difficulty

The Difficulty Numbers

Trivial (4)

Easy (6)

Tough (8)

Hard (10)

Nearly Impossible (12)

Difficulty for tasks should be based on an average person without the skills

Some Typical Modifiers

·          You have a skill the GM agrees is useful +1 (this is the skill/flaw Modifier)

·          You have a talent the GM agrees is useful +1 (this is the skill/flaw Modifier)

·         You have a flaw that the GM says will hurt your chances -1 (this is the skill/flaw Modifier)

Generally dont let a player use more than one talent and skill together, so maximum bonus would be +2.

·          You have the right gear for the job (i.e. climbing gear for climbing mountains) +1 to +2

·          You dont have any gear, and it would be required  (i.e. fixing an automobile with some gum and bailing wire aka McGyver) -1 to -2

·          You have a distraction or are trying to do things underpressure -1

·          You are taking your time, and can do the job right -1

·          You are trying to dodge something really fast (like bullets) -1 to -2

·          You are trying to shoot at someone who has cover -1 to -2

·          You have a better or longer reach weapon than your opponent (like a broadsword against a wee knife) +1

·          You have help (i.e. two people working on deciphering a code) +1 to +2 depending on the number of people and actually how useful they can be

·          You are doing multiple things at one time shooting your gun and running across the room, or firing a pistol two fisted John Wu style, or even trying to pick a lock and dodge arrows -1 for each additional action, so doing 2 things is a -1, doing three things is a -2, doing four things is a -3.

Generally the total modifiers should not be greater than -3 to +3, although in certain situations the GM might grant more (such when people are working together) or less (such as multiple actions in unfavorable conditions).

Remember things that affect how well you do things are modifiers, while the actual task it self are difficulty numbers. Dont try to say because a PC does not have the tool that the Difficulty number goes from easy to hard. Instead apply the modifiers.

Examples of Situation and Modifiers

This is to get the GM a feel for assigning a difficulty number for different actions.

Climbing

·          No Check Climbing stairs

·          Climbing rope ladder or chain link fence Trivial

·          Climbing a rope  Easy

·          Climbing a rough stone wall Tough

·          Climbing a smooth Rock Face  - Hard

·          Climbing the side of a modern skyscraper Nearly Impossible

But wait you say, what if you have the right kind of climbing gear. That is a situational modifier, give yourself a +1 to +2 for having the right gear. That means to that 10, it just got easier.

So lets assume you have an average body of 3. That means climbing that fence you will do it all the time, no problem Stat = 3, so any die roll with give you a 4. But if the bad guys are chasing you with dogs, well then, the GM might give you a 1 for having to climb the fence fast with dogs on your tail. Now you better roll. Action Check = d6 + 3 1 = d6+2 So if you roll a one your dog meat.

Now lets assume you learn from that, and go out and get skilled at climbing. Now instead of rolling D6 +3 you get to add a +1. So lets try to climb a rope.

Action Check = D6 +3 (stat) + 1( skill) = D6+4. As long as you dont roll a one you are fine.

Lets say you tell the GM you are taking a very long time to climb the rope, being very careful. Well now, you cant lose Action Check = D6 + 3 (Stat) + 1 (skill) + 1 (Situational Modifier) = D6+5. No Problem partner.

What about climbing that rope while it is freezing cold outside. Action Check  = D6 +3 (Stat) + 1 (Skill) + 1 (Situational Modifier Taking a long time) - 1 (Its cold outside) = D6 +4, try not to roll a one partner.

Now lets move on to the smooth rock face. You should only be climbing these if you are skilled anyway. Lets say you have full gear, ropes and all that type of stuff you need.

Action Check = d6 + 3 (stat) + 1 (skill) + 1 (equipment) = D6+5. Gotta roll a 5 or 6. So lets say you take your time, that would be another +1 which is D6+6, better odds. If someone is helping you along the way, like climbing in a team it might be D6+7 = even better. But you should really go out and work out more and become more fit to try it. If you had a Body stat of 4 or 5. It would be easier.

I hope this example gave you some insight on how flexible yet easy to use the SRE can be.
